11. Why rent a private lodging in Cuba?

One of the main attractions of Cuba is, undoubtedly, the actual contact with the Cuban people. If you spend your holidays in a hotel you will never be in touch with a real Cuban family. That’s why the best way to know the customs and traditions of our magic island is to lodge among us.

The renting of rooms to tourists for lodging and foreign visitors in private houses, was authorized and regulated in Cuba starting 1997. Licensed homeowners are authorized to rent no more than two rooms at a time, their renting quarters are subjected to monthly inspections, and their incomes are annually taxed.

It could be said that most of the people who travel to Cuba are looking to be in direct contact with Cuban nature, Cuban beaches, Cuban culture, Cuban music and mainly: with Cuban people. Staying in a private house is one of the best way to be in direct contact  with the Cuban culture, to receive their hospitality, to know how they live, how they are, how they face the problems of the daily life. Another evident reason is that you can save money if you rent in a private house. Most of the private lodgings are more economic than the hotels. You will also have the opportunity of enjoying, if you want it, an excellent Cuban meal at lower prices. The Cuban cuisine offer very attractive dishes that you can try at home. The services in the particular houses are more personalized and improved than in many hotels. In addition, when being in a particular lodging, you are not forced to take the routine life that impose the hotels in any place of the world, and thus you feel like in your house. The third reason is that in a private house you are allowed you to invite Cuban guests or friends and they are even possible to sleep. Be aware that the guest that you invite cannot be a minor and their name as well as their identification number will be written down in a control book that proprietor of the lodging (is a demand of the laws) must keep. In hotels it’s not allowed to receive visits of Cubans in the rooms.

In addition, this type of familiar business is always more efficient and customized. As you pay the amount of the rent directly to the proprietor of the house, you will be helping the economy of a Cuban family by this way.

On the other hand, for any hotel reservation the payment is requested in advance, while the owners of private houses accept the payment at your arrival. The hours of arrival & departure of the lodging are flexible and can be agreed with the owner.

The reservation is guaranteed in a Particular House. But in the event of any problem, the lodging in a similar particular house will be guaranteed without additional cost. We could add that this lodging offers you an effective form of learning Spanish.  Yes, the direct contact with the Cuban family will allow you to improve or to learn the Spanish language and for those that already know it, to know the peculiar tips and sentences of the Cubans.

Private lodgings are available all around Cuba. The only exceptions are Varadero Beach and the Keys, where you need to book yourself in a hotel room for housing there.

Hostel-lodging prices vary depending on the city and the neighborhood, or whether the hostel or house is located near the seafront or in the beach, or if there’s a pool and the rooms have an independent entrance. In Havana the minimum lodging price is usually $25 CUC per night per room, but you can find hostels or houses whose lodging prices are over $150 CUC per night. Luxurious lodgings offer the best facilities, by means of services, architecture, pools, furnishings, views, etc.

Facilities that you commonly find in a Particular House in Cuba:

  • Private bedrooms & bathrooms.
  • Accommodation up to two adults and one child per bedroom.
  • Air-conditioner and/or fan in the bedrooms.
  • Hot & cold water in bathrooms.
  • Towels, linen, soap, and toilet paper included.
  • Daily cleaning services & towels and linen changed regularly.
  • Free use of house common areas.
  • 24-hour check-in & 24-hour reception.
  • Access to phone, refrigerator & some facilities as radio, TV, CD/DVD-player
  • Luggage storage.
  • Additional information & friendly hospitality
  • Home-cooked meals & laundry services offered at an additional cost.
  • For house with no garage, parking available for a small fee.

12. Will I have to share  common areas of the house or apartment with the propietor or other tourists?

If you want to have total privacy we can offer you rooms and

apartments with total independence. However should be clear up that these rooms or apartments are inside or they belong to the property where propietor lives. In this case, you will have independent entrance to your room and you will rarely have to share some common area with lesser or other tourists. It is not allowed to lease a property in their entirety, because is established this way by the State Regulations for the leased activity.

13. If we are travelling in a large group, can we stay all together in the same place ?

It depends. We can make large bookings for you, but if you are a large group is impossible that everybody stays in the same house, is illegal. The regulating body of this activity in Cuba only allows to rent two rooms in a same house or apartment. We can provide you reservations in a range of 100 meters but in several apartments of a building or in several houses of a same block. We would send you photos and descriptions of all the rooms we have available for your booking.

14. Could you offer us suitable conditions if we are traveling with small children ?

Yes, some of the houses or apartments with connection to this site are specially prepared to offer you the best conditions for you and your baby or small kids.

15. Can anyone pick me up at the airport?

If you asked for it the owner of the reserved house or apartment may wait for you at the airport with a poster with your name. However, you will have to pay the transportation to the lodging. The price of a taxi from the airport to the city fluctuate between CUC 10.00 to 20.00 depending the area in which is located the reserved accommodation

16. How to pay for my accommodation in an apartment or room in private homes?

With few exceptions, you pay to the owners in cash, in CUC, once you are in the house.

You don’t have to pay anything for our services nor any quantity in advance when booking. This is a service based on  mutual trust.

We strongly suggest you that if for any reason you won’t use your reservation, please let us know in advance so as not to keep that family unnecessarily expecting you, so that we can accommodate another guest. Please, remember that houses have to pay a high tax for the license is room free or occupied.

17. Are expensive rents in private houses? What are the best ones?

Authorized rent houses to foreigners have to pay a high tax in CUC for a renting license. This tax is assessed per room rented, house amenities and its location and also for existing common areas, lounge, terrace, gastronomy, etc.Y el impuesto valora tambien la zona y la calle. Tax also includes price in depending of the region and the neighborhood where the house is.

Prices are fixed PER DOUBLE ROOM (not per person). In one room can be accommodated two adults plus minor children. Price is the same for one person than for two persons plus children.

Price reflects the quality of lodging (since no stars are awarded as hotels are, but tax is set according to its characteristics). There are discounts only in cases of long stays and paying all contracted days at the arrival.

So homeowners can not lower the price from that minimum, because they would lose money and in that case would be better to leave the license. That’s why even if a long stay, there is a limit that can not be lowered.

18.  How can I know if a house or apartment is authorized to rent?

Legal rental apartments and houses have a legal distinct like a large I at the entry and their owners fill an official record book (as in hotels), where should be written your data and you will sign. Homeowner must carry that book to show to Immigration authorities as soon as filling it.

Be very careful about staying in unlicensed houses. It is considered a grave breach of the law (even staying in the house of the bride /groom) and you may have trouble with authorities.

19.  Why through CubaVacation People?

There are in the Web several other sites of Cuban houses that offer a diverse information, to them we owe gratitude for the valuable data that have allowed us to obtain.

The advantages of our site www.cubavacationpeople.com are:

The Site will facilitate the clients having the necessary information so that they could make appropriated decisions. We would like to ask our clients to understand that if for some reason client arrives in Cuba after the day agreed in the reservation, it can cause that the chosen house may be busy and lodging would be proposed to the traveler in the same area. That's why we ask for the confirmation of the trip at least 72 hours before the flight. On the other hand, as there is not previous payment for our reservations, the proprietor runs with the risk in the event of not taking place the client's presence in the agreed date. This affects the owner of the house in a multiple way because if owner stops renting his house he also loses the fixed monthly tax that he is obliged to pay to the State (renting or not the house).

Our process of the reservation is extremely simple. You can trust us, all the houses that we put at your disposal are safe, comfortable and they have the due license of the Cuban authorities to offer this type of service.
